Hiroi Sekai

Very much separate from the rest of the world, existing in that slim moment between daylight and dark, the scenes created by Hiroi Sekai drift slowly across the screen. Cast forever in shades of dark blue and accented by orange light glowing from the setting sun, or from a street light, or from a fire burning in a cozy fireplace. Often from inside a secure place, cup of coffee nearby, or a 1980s style kitchen—stove, refrigerator—or sometimes a bed surrounded by books. Always the music, wrought by synthesizers with a low pedal tone at its base immediately pulling at subliminal mood overwritten by a semi-melody running counterpoint with almost-harmonies

Many of these short videos and photographs feature an isolated residence perched on a steep hillside with smoke rising from its chimney, a snow covered mountain in the background, distant lights of other lives far in the distance. Or a humble cottage at the fringe of a city, or quietly tucked into a neighborhood of similar dwellings. Sometimes a thin veil of snow covers the cottage roof while orange light beams from the windows. Perhaps an outbuilding sits in the background, or an ‘80s sedan waits quietly beside the house.

These are images and sounds from the edge, solitary, emotional. I wonder if the creator(s?) chose these particular elements for their subliminal values or were simply creating what felt right to them. The music alone seems to pull on me in mysterious ways; the slow ongoing background effects calm, minor keys bring sadness, frequencies probe emotions and evoke altered metal states.

Since I saw the first one, I’ve been fascinated by the effects, on me at least. I wonder who else is captivated by them. I’ve learned that the name Hiroi sekai (広い世界) is a Japanese phrase that translates to “wide world,” “vast world,” or “spacious world”. It is used to describe the expansive nature of the world or to imply that the world is large and full of possibilities, often emphasizing a sense of scale.

The artist is assumed to be male, and the works are found on all social media.
